Report by Nandini Chandrasekaran from St Christopher's School, Bahrain, after the group trip to London and Stratford in July 2000.

(This report was published and appears with the permission of the author and publisher.)

We arrived at Heathrow Airport at 07.40am, ready for a week of theatre, culture, youth hostels and the beautiful English countryside. There were 25 students on the trip, led by Mr. Thomas, Ms Amos and Mrs. Nash. After meeting our Dramart representative, Bill, we boarded our coach and made our way to The Generator Hotel. After being allocated our rooms and familiarising ourselves with the atmosphere of the hotel, we were given some spare time before we had to report for our afternoon visit to Covent Garden. This is a colourful and lively market square crammed with interesting shops and unusual 'buskers', including an opera singer.

We had time to grab a bite of lunch before heading to the National Museum of the Performing Arts. This proved to be quite entertaining as we were given a taste of the kind of costumes worn by a variety of characters. (Ms Amos looked splendid as Queen Elizabeth I!) Later on, after dinner we made our way to the Palace Theatre to see a dazzling performance of the world famous musical 'Les Miserables'.

The next day we were given a tour of Shakespeare's Globe International Centre and the award-winning Globe Exhibition by a lively and well-informed guide who brought Shakespeare's magical world to life! We then got a feel for history as we viewed a performance of 'The Tempest' standing in front of the stage as 'groundlings'. The performance was stunning, and by being so close to the actors, we were drawn into their humorous and hypnotic show. Later that evening we made our way to the Garrick Theatre to experience another enthralling piece of drama, 'An Inspector Calls', the haunting thriller by J B Priestley. We left the theatre fresh and awakened by the fascinating plot, imaginative production and ingenious set.

The following day saw us driving towards Stratford with the lush grass, clean air and fluffy sheep of the English countryside. We sampled a dash of colourful British history with our visit to Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. When you think of all the stories and whispers in the walls and floors of each of those rooms you are left in awe of the beauty of history. We then went to our Youth Hostel, Hemmingford House, a converted mansion in the middle of the lovely countryside. The group had dinner before the workshop and discussion with Alexandra Gilbreath, the Royal Shakespeare Company actress who was to play Juliet in a performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' that we were going to see the following evening. She was very friendly and willingly answered all our questions.

Next morning we were up bright and early for a fascinating visit to Warwick Castle. After creeping through torture chambers and climbing up towers, we went back to the hostel for lunch. We then took our coach down to The Other Place studio theatre to watch the premiere performance of 'La Lupa'. The play was very different to the other performances and used original, creative ideas in a very interesting drama space. I think it got mixed reviews but I thought it was very good. We were given a backstage tour of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which gave us a feel for all the careful preparation and hard work that goes on before a performance. As we stood on the stage we realised how much of themselves the actors have to give so as to reach the hearts and minds of the audience. Rain prevented us from having lunch by the River Avon, but we did manage to visit some of the old Shakespeare Properties, giving that same nostalgic feeling of a lost era. That night we returned to the main RSC Theatre to watch a lively performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' that ended our trip on a romantic note. The next day it was back to Bahrain!
