WELCOME TO SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is a land of surprises. Of breathtaking scenery, incredible wildlife, diverse people and sophisticated cities. The expectations of the most discerning of travellers are invariably surpassed. The Western Cape has its spectacular beaches and bountiful winelands and of course the Cape Peninsular and Cape Point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Cape Town itself is a must, with its dramatic Table Mountain backdrop and the lively Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Visit the Waterfront website on www.waterfront.co.za for more details on the facilities, accommodation and restaurants. This wonderful land can be easily reached by air and the airport is serviced by many international airlines.

CAPE TOWN

Cape Town is a beautiful city with perhaps the most dramatic backdrop of all - Table Mountain. The magnificent architecture ranges from Cape Dutch to Victorian. Cape Town has colourful markets and varied nightlife, most of which centres around the spectacular Victoria and Alfred Waterfront with its maze of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Table Mountain can be accessed via the new rotating cable cars, where you can view the Atlantic coastline with beaches, coves and bays of matchless beauty, such as Bantry Bay, Clifton, Bachelors Cove and Camps Bay. Further down the Peninsular is the quaint harbour town of Hout Bay and at the southernmost tip is of course 'Cape Point'.

THE BREAKWATER LODGE

Once a 19th century jail, the Breakwater Lodge is situated on the edge of the Waterfront and offers value for money accommodation with the basic comforts. Each of the 300 rooms has a television, telephone and welcome tray equipped with kettle, tea, coffee and biscuits. The hotel has the choice of two restaurants - Stonebreakers self-service Restaurant and the Treadmill Club - a tranquil and sophisticated restaurant bar. Extensive Conference Facilities are available and the drama workshops will take place within the hotel.

THE TRAIN LODGE

The Train Lodge is centrally located within easy access to the city centre, V & A Waterfront, Table Mountain and the majestic beaches of Cape Town. Train Lodge hosts a large variety of facilities designed to meet your every need, with personal attention and excellent service. Your 2 or 4 berth compartments in the converted railway carriages are serviced daily with all linen provided. Train Lodge offers a vibe atmosphere with young, friendly and helpful staff. It is your one stop Lodge between the mountain and the sea! Facilities include internet café, restaurant and pub, coffee shop, self-catering kitchen, BBQ areas, TV rooms, swimming pool, launderette and secure parking.

CLIMATE

In Cape Town the summer months are November to March and at this time the weather is generally dry, sunny but sometimes windy. The temperature can reach 35 C but normal summer days are 28-30 C. In the winter months the rains come and coupled with the winds can be rather chilly. You can also be lucky though with beautiful clear winter days.

TOUR DATE OPTIONS

We are initially offering and recommending that you travel to Cape Town in Feb, Oct, Nov or Dec, but of course if you would rather travel at other times of the year then please do not hesitate to contact us. In the winter months the flights are cheaper, but the weather is not as good. We are able to provide these courses at any time of the year.

WORKSHOP AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The students will be working with professional actor/directors from Cape Town and they will work through the week in a devising process to create a performance piece for final presentation in the Waterfront Amphitheatre. This piece will obviously have a very African theme and the process will allow the students to learn about the history, culture and music of South Africa. It is hoped that the experiences and encounters on the social activities of the course will influence the students' ideas for their creative process.

THE WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is within a few minutes of the city business district and in close proximity to Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard. It offers easy access to the Western Cape's other major tourist attractions and main route to the airport.

Please visit the website on
www.waterfront.co.za

MEALS

The breakfasts are taken at the hotel and most evening meals will be taken in a different restaurant each evening within the Waterfront development excluding the evening at Dizzy's in Camps Bay. These meals will be of 2 courses with one drink included.
